15th Annual Kensington 8K/2M/1K - Saturday, September 27

An annual Kensington tradition since 1993, the Kensington 8K, 2 Mile Challenge and 1K Fun Run has something for everyone. The 8k is a challenging race combining long hills and flats. A great training run for the experienced runner, a touchstone event for the intermediate and weekly runner. The Kensington 8k has grown in size and stature over the years but continues to highlight Kensington's unique small-town feel. The 2 mile and 1k fun runs are non-competitive events that families and younger runners really enjoy. This year the proceeds will support three public schools: Kensington Parkwood Elementary, North Bethesda Middle School and Walter Johnson High School. The volunteer organizers are a blend of parents and supporters with ties to these wonderful public schools. We encourage all students, teachers, administrators and staff from these schools to come out on race day, join the fun and embrace the community spirit that is the Kensington 8k.

Start Times

2-Mile Challenge: 7:45 a.m.
Wheelchair start of 8K Race: 8:25 a.m.
8K Race: 8:30 a.m.
1K Fun Run: 8:35 a.m.

The race course closes at 9:40 a.m.

Fees

Prior to Sept. 24, registration fees will be $20 for 8K, $12 for 2M and $10 for 1K. From Sept. 24 through race day, registration fees will be $26 for 8K, $15 for 2M and $12 for 1K. Family package available (includes 5 race t-shirts): $65 prior to Sept. 24, $75 from Sept. 26 through race day.

In Person Registration & Packet Pickup

In person registration and packet pick-up will be held in the Kensington Town Hall (see Directions) on Fri., Sept. 26 from 12 to 9 p.m. and on race day (Sept. 27) from 6:30 to 8:15 a.m.

Much of the world's Internet management and governance takes place in a corridor extending west from Washington, DC, through northern Virginia toward Washington Dulles International Airport. Much of the United States' military planning and analysis takes place here as well. At the center of that corridor is Tysons Corner--an unincorporated suburban crossroads once dominated by dairy farms and gravel pits. Today, the government contractors and high- tech firms--companies like DynCorp, CACI, Verisign, and SAIC--that now populate this corridor have created an "Internet Alley" off the Washington Beltway.

In Internet Alley, Paul Ceruzzi examines this compact area of intense commercial development and describes its transformation into one of the most dynamic and prosperous regions in the country. Ceruzzi finds that a variety of perennially relevant issues intersect here, making it both a literal and figurative crossroads: federal support of scientific research, the shift of government activities to private contractors, local politics of land use, and the postwar movement from central cities to suburbs.

Paul E. Ceruzzi is Curator of the National Air and Space Museum, Smithsonian Institution, Washington DC. He is the author of A History of Modern Computing (second edition, MIT Press, 2003) and other books, and coeditor of The Internet and American BusinessM (MIT Press, 2008).
